Damani to set example at Brands Hatch

- MEDIA ALERT -

Damani Marcano to set example for scholarship hopefuls

−Teen to support Team HARD’s driver-selection at Brands Hatch on 5th December−

16 year old racing driver Damani Marcano will be at Brands Hatch on Saturday 5th December, supporting Team HARD’s selection of scholarship hopefuls as they compete for a coveted sponsored drive with Team HARD in 2016. Damani will be held up as an example of what can be achieved by a driver who is “the complete package”, according to Tony Gilham, team principal at Team HARD.

damani-tony-gilham-snettertonTony Gilham, of Team HARD comments: “On the track Damani has gone from having never driven a car before to being among the front-runners – all experienced drivers. Off the track he has also excelled. Seeing his professionalism with the media and fans makes it hard to imagine he’s only 16 years old. He’s gone from virtually unknown to appearing just about everywhere in the media. He has become among the most talked about drivers inside and outside the paddock and this is what sponsors want.”

Damani has become something of a talking point, not just for how rapidly he has progressed on track but how much he achieves for sponsors off the track.

Terence Dove, Damani’s former karting coach recently posted on Facebook: “[Damani] is working every angle possible to make things happen and most important he delivers for his sponsors. I haven’t seen anyone yet do things so right to carve out a racing career from scratch, he is a pioneer and an inspiration to any kids who are told to lower their expectations from life.”

damani-marcano-smiling-team-hardTeam HARD recently highlighted Damani as an example of what companies can achieve with sponsorship based marketing on their website – with The Clever Baggers, one of Damani’s sponsors, naming him as a key factor in them achieving an 11% increase in revenue this year.

Tony Gilham of Team HARD adds: “Our scholarship isn’t just about how well the candidates do on track, it’s about their abilities off the track too. We wanted Damani with us during the scholarship selection to highlight, as a young driver coming through the ranks, just how important the off track performance is to being the complete package.”

Scholarship applicants have been invited to attend Brands Hatch on Saturday 5th December in a bid to impress Team HARD’s judges on and off the track, with the ultimate prize being a fully sponsored drive with Team HARD in the 2016 Volkswagen Racing Cup.

Damani piloted a fully race prepared VW Golf GTI R Cup Car in the Volkswagen Racing Cup alongside regular proven and experienced racing drivers. Damani is the only driver in the series who was too young to drive on public roads. Racing in the VW Cup was Damani’s first step on a multi-year programme to eventually race in the British Touring Car Championships (BTCC).

Damani was spotted by Team HARD in 2014 and became the youngest driver they had ever signed. Despite being too young to hold a driving license and never having raced a car before he went on to set records in 2015. He became the youngest driver to finish in the points in the first round of a Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup season. He ended the year in the top-7 on pace, challenging experienced adult drivers who had spent the season leading the championship. As a guest driver in the VAG Trophy, Damani also became the youngest driver to qualify on the front row and obtain fastest lap in a race.

VW Golf GTiR Cup Car: a 260 bhp race-prepared hatch-back capable of speeds of up to 150mph. These cars are based on a road car but stripped of all parts, not essential to racing, and fitted with a safety roll-cage meeting safety regulations of the VW Racing Cup. Additional differences include adjustable racing suspension and racing tyres that increase the amount of grip, and therefore cornering speeds that the car is then capable of.
